Where did pergolas come from?
The earliest evidence of pergolas is from Egypt, around 1400 BC (or 3400 BCE), where they were used by royalty and the wealthy for shade. The Romans adopted the use. In fact, “pergola” comes from the Latin word “pergola.”
Asian cultures also introduced pergola-style structures, called pagodas, originally used to house relics for Buddhist practices. The architecture of pagodas is more ornate than the Egyptian/Roman styles. Pagoda architecture has influenced today’s pergola styles.
