What styles are available for pergolas?
At Shoreline Awning & Patio, we custom-design your pergola to your specifications—creating a style that is uniquely yours. However, pergolas can be grouped into the following classifications:
- Standalone, supported by four or more posts or pillars.
- Single attachment, when one side of the pergola is attached to the wall of a building.
- Fully attached, when two or more sides of the pergola are attached to one or more buildings. This style is sometimes used over patios or courtyards.
- Roofs can be flat, angled, peaked, or domed, open beam, lattice, louvered, or solid.
We offer a variety of options to customize your pergola, and part of the custom-design process is to consider where the pergola is going to be installed. A hilltop pergola at a winery might benefit from features that are different than those for sidewalk café dining, or for backyard use.
Can I cover my pool with a pergola?
Many pool owners love spending time in the water, but are concerned about too much sun. Pergolas are versatile and can be placed almost anywhere, including near or over pools. Considerations for a custom-designed pergola over a pool include:
- The dimensions of the pool, or the section to be covered. The Shoreline design team also takes accurate measurements before constructing the pergola to make sure it fits in the designated spot.
- What kind of material surrounds the pool? Hardscaping may need to be modified to install posts.
- Do you need a permit? Check with your local building department. Shoreline can supply all of the design and construction documentation if a permit is needed.

Pergolas can be designed as part of an existing landscape or part of a new landscape design. We can design and build a custom pergola that blends into any landscaping.
