What’s the difference between a pergola and a patio?
A pergola is a structure that can be installed in a patio or used to expand patio space. Pergolas provide a versatile framework for designating special spaces for dining, relaxing, play areas, and more. Pergolas have been in use since around 1400 BC, first by the Egyptians for providing ornamental shade structures, and then adopted by the Romans. Installing a pergola is a way to beautify a patio and adjoining space. Pergolas can have the traditional beam/lattice tops, or a variety of other kinds of covers. They can also be enclosed with versatile shades and screens.
Do I need a building permit to install a pergola?
Whether you need a permit or not depends on your local building regulations. Many jurisdictions require a building permit if the pergola is attached to another structure, but not when it is freestanding. The best thing to do is to check with your local building department. If you should need a permit, Shoreline Awning & Patio is happy to provide the building department with all of the required documentation for any pergola we are constructing for you.
Can we replace our front entryway with a pergola?
Yes. However, before starting, check with your local building department to find out if you need a permit. Removing or remodeling a front entryway may require a building permit. Our Shoreline design team can custom-design a pergola that gives the front of your home or business the personalized look you want.
Are there size limits for a pergola?
Not necessarily. Traditionally, pergolas are designed to be supported by four pillars, but times are changing, and people have new ideas. At Shoreline, we work with you to make your idea a reality.
