From sketch to shade—how Shoreline Awning, Patio & Ironworks creates custom pergolas
-Most homeowners know exactly where they want a pergola. Over the patio off the kitchen, beside the pool, or in the corner of the garden where the late-afternoon light is just right. What they often don’t know is how to get from that idea to a finished structure. Shoreline Awning, Patio & Ironworks, which designs and builds custom pergolas for San Luis Obispo homes and businesses, is sharing a behind-the-scenes look at how a custom pergola comes together, from the first sketch to the final installation.
Shoreline has served California’s Central Coast, from Monterey to Ventura, since 1982. Every pergola is designed, manufactured, and installed by Shoreline’s own teams, so one company is responsible for the project from start to finish.
Starting with a vision of how the space is to be used. Homeowners can prepare for the first conversation with the design team my asking themselves a few questions:
- How will the space be used? Morning coffee, family dinners, entertaining friends, a quiet reading spot, or outdoor seating for customers?
- Where does the sun fall throughout the day, and which direction does the wind usually come from?
- Should the pergola stand on its own, attach to the house, or mount above a door or window?
- What kind of roof fits the space and the home’s style? Pergola roofs can be flat, peaked, angled, or domed, with solid, latticed, louvered, or fabric tops.
- Will the space need lighting, fans, or outlets for entertaining after dark?
Finished plans aren’t necessary. The Shoreline design team considers San Luis Obispo weather patterns when customizing a pergola. Photos of the space, a rough sketch on the back of an envelope, or pictures of pergolas the homeowner admires are enough to get started. Homeowners can upload photos or sketches and start a conversation with the design team.
Shoreline’s designers works closely with the homeowner to turn the initial sketches, photos, and ideas into a pergola built for the specific space. Designs aren’t limited to a plain square or rectangle. The team can add custom ornamental ironwork, wiring for lighting and fans, drop shades for privacy and wind control, and furnishings that complete the look. Customers receive an upfront estimate before work begins, so there are no surprises.
Once the design is approved, the pergola is manufactured at Shoreline’s Paso Robles facility, or special ordered from one of Shoreline’s manufacturing partners. Shoreline’s own installation crews then build the pergola on site. Keeping design, manufacturing, and installation under one roof gives customers a single point of contact and consistent quality from the first sketch to the final bolt.
A well-designed pergola changes how a home lives. A bare patio becomes an outdoor dining room. A side yard becomes a shaded retreat. The San Luis Obispo pergola design team helps homeowners imagine those possibilities and then builds them to last.
Shoreline Awning, Patio & Ironworks designs, manufactures, and installs custom pergolas, louvered pergolas, awnings, patio covers, shade sails, drop shades, sunrooms, and ornamental ironwork for homes and businesses throughout the Central Coast.
